If you could track the ramifications of a good argument (all the ppl you'll never hear from who thought "hmm, Mandrola made a good point, I wonder...." and then went and told someone else), then I bet it would kick your bike ride's ass.https://twitter.com/drjohnm/status/1378446103994114049 …

This morning I contemplated fighting w the unconstrained vision folks on Twitter. I even tapped out a thread. Then I changed my mind, deleted the thread, and did this 👇(it was far better) https://strava.app.link/vvr9Yf6bafb  pic.twitter.com/YOXRVns1la

@VPrasadMDMPH was talking about this recently on a podcast. One reason to challenge the popular tribal view is that they may be wrong; the other, perhaps more important reason, is it gives others permission TO THINK. Debate has to be allowed. Or we are doomed.

That's beautiful. If you don't challenge, then ppl may not even notice there's a viable challenge. It's not just tribalism, it's all of progress. There's always a better way, and it only comes from challenging existing ideas. (But I am glad you enjoyed your ride!)

80 miles, 3600 vertical feet That is a good ride I agree with John that one important role is "pathbreaker" the person who gives others permission to think what they are already thinking/ back of mind

Debate requires shared facts. When people who have been wildly wrong about Covid have their errors reframed as “thinking differently,” this inhibits debate. If I said worst consequence of a car crash was a bruised toe, I’d be inhibiting debate on speed limits.

You’ve described the very common Myth of the Framework - we learn a ton when we have wildly different views. Shared facts make for boring agreement, not much learning. http://www.math.chalmers.se/~ulfp/Review/framework.pdf …

Doubling down after repeatedly being proven wrong by events isn’t debating man. Yelling about tribes because you have repeatedly been proven wrong by aggregate data doesn’t make you silenced.

There’s a difference between “challenging a popular view” and “spreading baseless misinformation.” This distinction is especially important during a pandemic, when physicians have an extra responsibility.

Isn’t that just another argument? Look how quick ppl are to call minor differences of view on, say, school openings, “baseless misinformation.” Let’s not waste time arguing what is misinformation and just refute the points.

I just listened to his convo on ZDogMD podcast discussing economist Dr. Oster’s Atlantic piece comparing risk of unvaccinated children to risk of vaccinated grandparents. Problem was,the only risk metric he cited was risk of dying. Is death the only adverse outcome of infection?
