Fair enough. I did forget to mention that whenever I hear the bit about dragging "both sides" together (as if the middle MUST be the most reasonable option), I groan. Would he say the same about provaxers and antivaxers? Cancer quacks and oncologists?

I don't think that was what he was trying to imply, but rather that "bringing both sides together" means looking for common ground that (nearly) everyone can agree on up front (e.g. sex ed & cheap/free contraception will reduce abortions; etc...). 1/2
