As someone pretty familiar with Manhattan and comfortable riding fast and mixing with traffic, it's not as big of a deal when bike lanes disappear. But for newcomers, it's certainly intimidating and not the best way to experience what NYC has to offer.

I didn't fully realize just how sparse the network is down in SoHo/Little Italy until tonight. Just look at the map! (Red circle is where I met the couple) There's a lone downtown lane on Lafayette, but no uptown lanes until Chrystie (W Broadway only has sharrows)

Screenshow of Google Maps showing Chinadown/Little Italy/SOHO area, and how there's no bike lanes for several blocks to go uptown.

Related: Drivers, if you don’t want to be “held up” by cyclists (aside: you will spend far more time being held up by your fellow motorists) you should be in favour of segregated lanes! That way we can all get around the city w/o having to mix and slow each other down!

I reassure them that we’re almost at Lafayette, where there’s a proper bike lane, and indeed, when we get there, they visibly relax. We end up parting ways at Houston, and I can only hope the rest of their trip/biking experience is more relaxed and enjoyable.

I ride on the traffic-side of the lane, while they follow behind/next to me on the right/curbside half of the lane. Several cars pass us in the other lane w/o issue. A few honk angrily, only to immediately get stuck in (car) traffic ahead. The couple both look uneasy/nervous.

I figured the most direct route would be to continue on Centre St until it merges with Lafayette, and then they could take Lafayette up to 13 St and cut across to 8 Ave. I tell them the plan, and tell them to follow me. Centre St has 2 travel lanes, so we take the right lane.

While waiting at the light on Centre St/Canal, a couple on Citibikes rode up next to me. They seem frazzled, and they ask me if there’s a bike lane nearby. “It’s so crazy down here, we just want to get to 8 Ave.” I stared at Google Maps for a while; there’s not much down here.

This evening I met a couple visiting from Quebec City, and I was reminded of how hard it is for newer cyclists (or cyclists new to the city) to feel safe , and how far we have to go before we can say we have a comprehensive bike network. A thread:

I think I see the painted outline of the future "pork chop" and the beginnings of a pedestrian island to close this at Queensboro Bridge! Also very much looking forward to getting all those potholes smoothed out... cc

You might have a problem w/ if you have a "No Parking Sign" on your building's entrance ramp. Better hope there isn't a fire and no one w/a wheelchair needs access. Expired placard on minivan. 2 Ave and 14 St. NY:GMA7873 NY:GXH2127

I think a bike map that factors in risk is a great idea, especially to help people get started with biking. But I'm sad that it has to be a thing.

Every experienced bike commuter does this mental calculation/planning: this road is pretty quiet, that intersection gets hairy so let me avoid it. It's a calculation drivers never have to perform. Biking as transportation won't take off, until we can just get on our bikes and go.

This is the most brazen red light running I have ever seen.

Anyone who claims to have lived/walked in NYC and never seen a car run a red light is either lying, not paying attention, or so desensitized to the crazy antics of car drivers that they don't notice it anymore. This was last night, but I could post something like it every day.

In case you've never come across it before, one of the most awful threads you'll ever read. If this was about stabbings or shootings on this scale the government would already be addressing it. But cars, so meh. Fuck bad drivers. Get fucking angry about this.

"Welcome to New York" is a phrase that's thrown at me sarcastically when I confront drivers for violating my space. And here I was thinking that standing up for myself and not letting people walk(drive?) all over me was a quintessential New York trait. 🙄
