Last week I had an argument with someone about whether or not the current winter in Germany is normal (I don't think it is). So I started looking into temperature data and ended up writing a new blog post about what "normal" means (with tons of charts!)

  3. I love but there's this bug that's driving my crazy. I select text in the editor and press ctrl+x to cut it. But when I try to paste it using ctrl+v nothing happens (empty clipboard!). Then I have to undo using ctrl+z to get my text back. If I try again it works though.

We all want to help address the climate crisis. But it’s such a complex issue that it can be hard to distinguish between data-backed improvements and feel-good distractions. So here's your data-backed guide:

Our best estimate is that 100% of the warming the world has experienced is due to human activities. Natural factors – changes in solar output and volcanoes – would have led to slight cooling over the past 50 years:

‘Eat local’ is common advice for a low-carbon diet. But this has little impact on your carbon footprint. Transport accounts for only 6% of food emissions. Focus instead on *what* you eat. Food choices > food miles. Latest article:

I'm a climate futurist. My work explores how natural & human systems are changing each other, and what those changes mean for us. Every few years I share some key trends I see emerging—ones big enough to alter our lives & fast enough to matter now. So, what's next? (thread)

In just 100 years, fossil fuel use has more than undone 5000 years of natural cooling. It's hotter now than any time in the history of human civilisation. We are catapulting ourselves out of the Holocene into uncharted territory. Current life on Earth is not adapted to this.

It takes time and effort to shred this pile into small pieces to use it as mulch. It takes even more work (and craft) to convert the larger logs into construction wood. But it's this work that we owe the planet. I made my choice: no more wood burning in my garden!

Also I can't forget the chants to "keep it in the ground" from all the climate protests last year. It's time we stop burning the wood, and instead re-using it in ways that keeps the captured carbon in or on the ground.

But now I think we need to change this tradition. No idea if the CO2 emissions of Easter Fires are significant in any way. It just feels like the wrong decade for celebrating massive fires while drowning our sorrows in alcohol. Easter Fire feels more and more like a metaphor.

As gardener I am part of this process. Cutting trees and bushes is necessary, and so I end up with this wood pile myself. In the past, these winter months would've been the time where I stack them up and burn them in cozy bonfires (or keep them for Easter Fire)

The purpose of it is something like casting out the bad winter spirits or so. For many communities and local gardeners it's also an easy way to get rid of all the tree-cut and "green waste" that accumulate over the colder seasons (when it's safe to cut trees).

There is this old tradition that's very common in Germany, called Osterfeuer (Easter Fire). Every year the night before Easter Sunday, we pile up giant stacks of wood and get drunk while watching it burn down. Here's a video [thread]
