Cruel as it seems, misinformation about #cancer is ubiquitous online. Too frequently, it accelerates death of patients. In @IrishTimes today, I delve into why @campaignforkate bill protecting patients from charlatans & cranks is so important & timely.. https://www.irishtimes.com/opinion/the-vulnerable-must-be-protected-from-bogus-cancer-cures-1.3869314 …pic.twitter.com/rC8wMkQwVb

The UK Cancer Act 1939 bans the advertising of fake treatments and cures. Alas it is avoided by claiming they are food supplements or natural remedies.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cancer_Act_1939 …

Yup. It was great for its time, but we're striving to avoid that pitfall with this bill. Although there are still prosecutions under the act to this day!

What do you do when whole communities, celebrities etc rally round to fundraise for an expensive treatment that you know is fake?

Oh man that's a hard one. I've written about it a bit - but I'd hope if they can't push their narrative, it will stem the disinformation that leads to these heartbreaking scenarios.

Why stop at Cancer Dr Grimes, I work in the MSK area and have charlatans and “bone setters” that people travel miles for. I genuinely feel I was the fool for doing an MSc in Physio and practicing evidence based therapy

This needs broadening out to all fake remedies. Quack treatments and fake "cures" for #autism are extremely harmful and are financially ruining families.

Absolutely. I initially wanted that, but there are legal reasons it has to be done piecemeal. But if we get this through the door, then I'd hope it's a start and a framework
