Because Slack lets you distract people no matter where on the planet they are? :-)

yeah, the galaxy brain version of this is that slack is just open plan offices for people who are lucky enough to have private offices.

I don’t understand open plan offices for work that requires concentration. When I was a reporter it was an open plan because we were always on deadline; people were constantly shouting across the room. Can’t think of other work scenarios that would be like that though
-
Yeah, it's total nonsense. There's a notion of camaraderie and dynamism that maybe comes from environments like newsrooms, but lets be real -- it's all about commercial real estate prices.

But but but they build in "collaboration rooms" for impromptu meetings - which are all occupied by 7:30am by people who get there early just to camp out in them all day.
-
I do wonder if there's a model to justify offices based on the sq footage of "collaboration rooms" you need to build converging with the cost to just give everyone (or every 2-3 people) an office, esp since when you're in a room your desk sq footage is wasted.

Oh how I wish the people in my open office plan were as considerate as your colleagues. Right now I've got someone popping bubble wrap in our 350-person open office plan, despite multiple pleas to stop.
-
Monstrous!

I stood and yelled at them. They stopped.

The whole point of using asynchronous communication is to not interrupt your coworker, private office or not.

Then there’s the “loud talker” who simply refuses to abide by this social norm
-
Some people are loud talkers (I’m not) and some are ebullient when something goes right (me, occasionally). I’m usually /very/ quite and can’t work around punctuated distractions but… the problem is not the people, but the space in which they are placed to “work”.

This paper was part of a special issue that takes a broad interdisciplinary look at interactions of human to human, mammal to mammal and insect to insect and how their built environments (from their offices to their nests) influence their behavior (see http://ow.ly/qcT130kLidf ).

Whoa, I knew open plan offices were nonsense but I hadn't made a connection with Slack but it makes perfect sense!
