New: Millions of Ring doorbells & home cameras are now watching the U.S., and local police/fire last year requested their video more than 20,000 times (!). But after a deadly shooting, police are now worrying "how these systems could be used against us”

Pretty messed up that a mom had to have this conversation w/ their 7-yr-old: "Every time you ride your bike down this block, there are probably 50 cameras that watch you going past. If you make a bad choice, those cameras will catch you."

Mental health apps aren't as private as you think, via My .02 - they also aren't as private as we deserve, and they also are a flaming bright neon sign that we need a better health care system.

so the deeptom videos were -- as expected -- made by a visual effects specialist (and *just possibly* involved a tom cruise impersonator). all this to say they were extremely good but they were also extremely at the high end of the fakery you could buy

  13. I've talked to lots of Ring / Nest / Blink / Arlo camera owners. They love the peace of mind & quietly watching strangers, but paranoia abounds: "They think, ‘If I put all these cameras up, I’ll be safe.’ Safe from what? It’s only making them more afraid"

Chains like CVS, Walmart and Walgreens are collecting data from millions of customers as they sign up for shots, which they say they'll use to promote stores/services, tailor marketing and keep in touch with consumers. story:
