What is the point of the last couple paragraphs which clearly belong in a separate piece? Reading about Ring/ surveillance then abruptly about phones?
I am honestly confused how this is so diametrically different than manual canvassing? Or, is the issue having cameras in the wild at all? The world has changed -- people have thousands of dollars left on their doorsteps, are they supposed to do nothing to protect it?

So in a nutshell, cops spy on you through your neighbor's doorbell camera enabled by Amazon.
I have google nestcam with understanding it is used to protect me and safty of my family. I have no issues sharing footage which I have in the past with local PD. We are in different world where your iPhone/Android is surveillance tool itself.
