Is there a reason US elections last so long that isn't simply to extract as much $$ for campaigns as possible?

partly because our elections are scheduled in advance—in parli systems they hold em a few months after parli is dissolved, whenever that is

UK started having fixed schedules in 2011 and their elections are getting longer with every new parliament
