I was on the product team in the early days of Marcus, so I'm old enough to remember analysts calling for GS to spin it off and saying it "wasn't a core compentency" of the firm Lmaohttps://twitter.com/rexsalisbury/status/1444876132243820547 …

We are not selling a bank anymore, we are selling banking-as-a-service, ideally through a whitelabel API, get with the times!

A race to the bottom to provide a commodity service with subpar tech talent, and senior leadership that won’t understand it enough to throw the necessary manpower and resources at it, I’ve heard this story in literally every seat I had there

Really though: the hard thing about big organizations is that it’s such an uphill battle to do anything innovative or different because unless you have a high-visibility role in one of the main revenue lines, nobody is ever gonna care.

Some of this stuff gets funded for a while, or even for a decade, but it remains on the margins and is improperly staffed and incentivized and eventually the senior people realize they might make MD at best but won’t get much further than that and leave.

I saw a lot of senior people hired to do some big initiative and they all leave 12-18mo later when they realize it’s not gonna pay out. Tarwal lasted pretty long tho, the txn bank and consumer bank was actually a high enough priority that it worked out
