The thing is though, at both Google and Facebook, a single line of business generates between half and 3/4ths of the firms total revenue. A lot of their products are just engineering jobs programs or loss leaders if we're honest
What I am saying is that Ruth porat should start cutting headcount, loudly and visibly. Investors would love it

If it sets up an ape fight to get into the LOB that makes money, I think their engineering org will come out stronger for it. Works in banking (or at least it used to…)

The other thing I guess is that locking up talent is useful because it prevents a Cambrian explosion of competition against the incumbents.
