this is a disgrace. having crazy gerrymandered districts gives us crazy partisan legislative bodies made up of crazy incompetent people ultimately giving us incompetent rule. to the extent a 2-party system could ever work, it requires competitive races. https://twitter.com/Redistrict/status/1439944794516639746 …pic.twitter.com/ayDNnis7t3

To wit, today Florida governor Ron DeSantis appointed a man to be the state's Surgeon General because that man has exaggerated vaccine safety concerns and been a loud proponent of alternative covid therapies to include fluvoxamine, ivermectin, hydroxychloroquine, & quercetin.

in less radicalized states, the time is now for a third party focused on government modernization, efficient public services, good roads & bike paths, evidence-based schools, civil rights protections, quality electric grid & cyber-defense, and reasonable levels of taxation.

Poli sci research has found that no 3rd party is sustainable in a 1st past the post system--they're structurally doomed because voters are aware of party size and will actively avoid "wasting" votes on nonviable candidates even if they align ideologicallyhttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Duverger%27s_law …

Maybe harder federally but lots of countries use FPTP and have more than two parties with non-trivial amounts of influence. E.g. Canada has had provincial governments outside the two 'main' parties

yeah agreed, in parliamentary systems especially it's pretty obvious that minor parties can form even with single member FPTP due to coalition dynamics with the big 2 for ex. i think that claims like "the Conservative party made UKIP possible" is compatible with Duverger's

Yeah, I think you could end up with coalition dynamics here too though, there are already independents so it's conceivable that they could start to band together especially when the balance might depend on how they vote.

i would argue that we already have them in the form of intra-party caucuses and party "wings"/"factions", but of course the effects of this kind of coalition are muted due to them being enforced in primaries instead of general elections
