My bigger question is if the vax works, why do they need protection from unvaxxed?

because it's not 100% effective environmental factors such as time of exposure, age, preexisting conditions, and variant all matter. just because it works doesn't mean it's ironclad. unvaxed people pose a major threat to public health across the board.

Do you consider people who recovered from Covid as good as vaxxed?

AFAIK, the protectiveness of natural antibodies is still an object of ongoing study but i'm aware of at least one study on re-infection risk showing that being unvaxed was associated with 2.34x higher odds of reinfection compared to vaxed (link here: https://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/volumes/70/wr/mm7032e1.htm …)

there is also strong lab evidence that the immune response of recovered individuals increases post-vax: "immunization boosted neutralizing titers against all variants and SARS-CoV-1 by up to 1000-fold" in blood samples of recovered individuals (link: https://www.science.org/lookup/doi/10.1126/science.abg9175 …)
