Someone who knows what they're talking about: convince me that EGL is a preferable solution to just flatly raising the gas limit Ethereum--is there something I'm missing?

It isn't functional because gas limit changes have occured when needed and safe previously. If it was something that needed incentivising but wasn't addressed yet then it'd be a different story.

I'm looking for arguments in the other direction, to the extent that the exist. To be clear I think the gas limit should be higher.
