No one who supports EGL is doing so for free.
Someone who knows what they're talking about: convince me that EGL is a preferable solution to just flatly raising the gas limit Ethereum--is there something I'm missing?

That doesn't really cut in either direction for me, but I certainly agree that raising gas limit is free and easy to do

It isn't functional because gas limit changes have occured when needed and safe previously. If it was something that needed incentivising but wasn't addressed yet then it'd be a different story.
