Kamil Choudhury added,
Amazon loses AWS. Google probably loses Android. I can't tell what Apple loses, they're just hardware.
Would make more sense for Google to lose YouTube imo, with apple they would probably be forced to divest parts of the software services division
yeah I don't think they make that much on Android (could be wrong) but with youtube I believe they're pretty cagey about it's profitability and hint it might lose money because (I imagine) there's few fatter targets if the numbers got released on it
Android gives them the ability to shake down every handset manufacturer out there with the Google Play agreement.
There are reasons to leave Android alone, of course: security of a unified ecosystem is nothing to sneeze at. There are going to be serious tradeoffs in the space.
I feel you. My other thinking too is that the integration/leverage it gives google is bad but there's low hanging fruit and then there's instagram literally lying on the ground begging to be split off.
Whatsapp too, come to think of it. IMHO Google has actually a pretty good job of preparing for antitrust action.
Notice how Microsoft gets a free pass here! Being second best at a lot of things and not obviously obnoxious about them is going to be extremely lucrative for them.
in fairness other than Xbox, cloud has to be one of their only success stories since their 90's heyday. Almost feels like people take pity on them plus there's dec competition for cloud.
Successfully moving office to SaaS model has to go on the list too imo
yeah that's fair although almost low hanging fruit since that's 'the thing to do' over the past decade or so
