What does the word “investing” mean to you? Is it different than “saving”? How is it different from “betting”? What’s your mental model look like?

"Investing" is when you buy something in the expectation it will improve your productivity/output. "Speculation" (betting) is when you buy something you think will appreciate in value. "Saving" is when you do not consume.

These are idiosyncratic definitions, but they are also correct. Purchasing a stock is not investing, unless you are a company trying to do a merger.

Angel investing doesn’t improve productivity, shall we call it angel speculation?

Correct. Any exchange of money for any financial assets without intent to change the operating business is speculation.

I guess angels often help the business operationally or also have more than monetary interest in the outcome. e.g. Some angels fund climate change stuff knowing it’s probably not perfect allocation for short term gains.

Maybe that's true but it's an ancillary effect of the core business, the LPs aren't getting into the fund for the productivity gains I can promise you that much
