there's probably a really good article/book/study to be written on the transformation of the 'elite' career path going from 'work at a premier company' to 'work at an investment bank or consulting firm working for that same premier company'

wow didn't even think of that, it's a great take. One of my pet theories is that it's basically an outsourcing because it allows managers to offload blame if a project fails. But I guess I was coming at it thinking of mckinsey milking Saudi Arabia for 5 year plans every 5 years
