Most of them don't read the code! And like not all PMs are engineers and most don't need to be, but even nontech PMs should be able to recite the architecture IMO. At GS many simply couldn't, and it made explaining project sizing very difficult without resorting to hand waving
When a senior leader asks the PM why we are running late (always running late) the answer should be precise and grounded in the affected systems

One hundo. My fave 'excuse'/put off is to basically say it's working (then Stephen A voice) 'But!' and then you list whatever error/impediment and say that resolution is indeterminate and give a conservative timeline.
