And I don't say that to discount the impact of this at all, more so just to observe that there is some partisanship built into sports fandom that will change the way American culture and media cover this protest

Empirically this is only true of the NFL, if you look at the partisan tilt of every major sports league NBA fandom is easily the most liberal.
