How is Patreon not profitable as is? I don't understand. All they have to do is host. Artists do the rest.

On a serious note, it's super unlikely they're bearing the risk here. Most likely they are getting referral fees for some bank partner they have plugged in on the backend. And referral fees are 100% riskless profit
