To what extent is our mental picture of even very bad times in history skewed toward the positive due to the sampling bias of the lucky literate who felt like writing?
Or people who just assumed a certain miserable state of affairs was the way things had to be so it's never remarked in their writings that sex with their spouse was never actually good or something like that.

One of the things I really liked about Deadwood was how it showed that shit sucked ass for rich, poor, everyone, yeah it's a world of poetical badass sharpshooters and schemers but medicine, sanitation, and everything else was primitive and awful

I think one of the reasons Mythic Noble Romantic Reaction seems to be found in all civilizations is the perspective of writers. There are no chapters of the Illiad about the demigod Achilles getting the runs due to poor battle camp sanitation.

A related thought but I think there's probably a very hard to bridge emotional inferential distance between people who grew up with unhappy parents vs happily ever after parents and it comes up especially when talking about how life and relationships were better in the past
