I just went to get my son’s Epi-pen prescription refilled and was told they’re out of stock due to a “national shortage.” ...is this actually a thing???

Same w/ my dr. She said even an expired one is better than none at all, as long as the liquid hasn't turned brown. If it's clear, I still keep it as backup backup backup.
-
Good to know, thanks. I was getting ready to get a new one.

There is a small see through window on the side of epi pens so you can check to see if they are really outdated or not by the color of the medicine. Also don’t let the pharmacy fill your prescription with pens whose expiration date is just a few months away instead of full year.
-
Also, epinephrene is very cheap and so are syringes. I wouldn’t recommend this for children but most adults can operate a regular shot as well as a pen. It allows for customized doses and needle size too.
-
I don’t know how many states allow otc purchase of needles. Not on the west coast.
-
Intravenous needles are restricted. Not subcutaneous. You can easily ask your doctor for needles, a disposal kit and ephedrine prescription. As well premarking the required dose on the needles. (My pharmacist premarks my needles with red sharpie reason we love Taiwan.)

Taiwan?

Please be careful injecting expired med during an emergency. It's true that the drug may not expire right away after expiration date but it's risky during a life-threatening situation. Suggestion, talk to your doctor and get the vials and learn how to inject, probably cheaper too

Folks without insurance have no choice but Togo with what is available. The problem with health care in America

Understood and agreed!! Check your EpiPen and see if it's one of the ones that had and extended expiration date https://www.fda.gov/NewsEvents/Newsroom/FDAInBrief/ucm617724.htm …

Just a friendly FYI, you should always carry two. We’ve had misfires before and had to use a back-up. Not trying to lecture, just friendly advice.
-
I do have 2. I have never used them but shellfish almost killed me.
-
Ekd why don't you have Obamacare?
-
Snark? The impetus for
@AshaRangappa_ ‘s tweet wasn’t to complain abt price but to complain abt the shortage/unavailability. Bigger prob is shortage; w/ adequate supply, price will come down again even for uninsureds. Some can’t get even with $$

There is a new epi pen that is not that expensive and you can call the manufacturer and they will provide you with the first one for free, maybe longer. It is called AUVI-Q madr by MedVAdntx 844-357-3968

Yeah... former paramedic here. I’ve administered a lot of epi. If you keep it out of extreme temperature variations (don’t leave it in your car), it should keep its potency past the exp date, but not for long. It’s safest to get an RX for IM epi and learn to draw it up yourself.

Came here to say this. Certain physicians have told certain people that no doctor would refuse to use a pen if expired, and not to sweat it one bit.

This will work for adults. School children on the other hand, no. The schools will NOT accept any expired meds for the kids. They will NOT administer. Kids could die waiting on ambulance to respond.

After 4 years after expire date it will still have some 80% effect, out of full effect, and it only needs 60% effect to work 100%

Me too. My epi pens went from 10 to 50 to 200 a year for an event that may or may not happen. Just keep an eye on the color of the liquid.
