    Patients often say things like “I know it’s ridiculous that I’m crying” or “I know I shouldn’t care what other people think of me.” Guess what: it‘s healthy to cry, everyone cares what people think, these are human emotions. Don’t let society tell you that you shouldn’t feel.

    The behaviors we adopt as children to protect ourselves from unhealthy environments become the behaviors that, as adults, drive our relationships to dysfunctional places. It’s hard to change these behaviors until you understand them. Have self-compassion while you do the work.

    Is it me or are dogs just creatures bred to have an anxious attachment style, and cats are just creatures with an avoidant attachment style...and the one you’re drawn to probably says something (be it that it’s the same, or often, the opposite) about your own attachment style?

    I often remind my patients that therapy is not a court of law. It’s a place where you can try on thoughts & feelings, decide they’re not quite right, and completely change your mind. Having a safe space to do this fosters an ability to have strong convictions loosely held.
