Oh, absolutely. The B&N campaign also just feels like a capitalist endeavor to drum up sales and exploit and pacify. I wasn’t disparaging your tweet or the artwork; I just remember that moment so vividly that it has perhaps permanently scarred me.
Also interesting is that B&N published a Romeo & Juliet edition for that campaign, but that doesn’t seem to evoke the same interrogation of whiteness that this edition does. Maybe that is my fault. Maybe I’m contextualizing it too much or in the wrong ways. It seems different.
R&J has been more successful in its global ambit. It’s feud narrative lends itself well to cross-racial and cultural narratives. The history plays as artifacts of white English history do not, so this is a particularly provocative choice.
