Anyone who thinks they have little or nothing to learn from others, invariably offers little or nothing in return. Wise leaders from Calvin to Hinckley knew it then, and we need more people demonstrating their insight, now. Advisors...choose what you value.

Be sure that your KPIs respond to the needs of all of your stakeholders — or you could be leaving certain departments vulnerable to underperformance in critical areas.

From the academia side, it's a lack of understanding of what PR actually is from administrators. I've been told to teach things like how to write a press release or PSA, when I pushed for classes in research and strategic PR planning (I got shot down).

When I teach a freshman class, I always include research components in assignments...even if it’s something as simple as a competitor analysis or interviewing a mentor/pro about their role in PR. It makes it easier for students to understand the connection.

Certainly feel that a BSc in Psychology and an MA in Politics equipped be pretty well. I guess it's the difference between knowing how to design a great piece of content to knowing why you should have that content.

Angela, I see this with our executive Mbas who are in comms but not with a related degree. With theory many things taken initially for granted because were taught on the job start to make sense - gender balance, perceptions, focus on management paradigm...

Interesting to see the popularity of PR degrees vary across borders. We wholeheartedly support the development of PR in higher education, which is why we have dedicated partner universities that offer free PRCA membership to all students.

., the challenge I had teaching to undergrads was getting my students to understand the importance of research + strategy, not just "doing." From an admin side, it was getting the higher-ups to understand that teaching 2 weeks of PSAs was B.S.

In France, we have students and lecturers who start PhDs in PR and communication. Less than in business and physics but it's a reality.

I think this is an important dividing line. In Europe, the trend is towards communication management and strategic communication. In the US, public relations is still in favour (it was invented there!). The UK, as ever, is somewhere in the middle.

Also I feel PR may feel like you are specialising (even though it’s very broad!) and at 18 that might feel quite big. Maybe that’s why people are choosing marketing & journalism > PR?

While PR and journalism professionals - and students - share some common skills, their fundamental mindsets should be diametrically opposed - public interest scrutiny vs private interest advocacy

My course had a mix of theory & practical elements, but it also included a mandatory 40 week work placement which meant we had good knowledge & practical experience to take out into our first jobs. The placement was one of the reasons I chose the course

This is very true! Both parents and teachers are key influencers in a young persons decision making process. Often students are steered towards courses with a clear/traditional career pathway

Absolutely, Pete. It's a challenge and I've seen PR programs falter and die due to the lack of real-life experience focus.

  16. It sure does! Having instructors who are comfortable with the complexities on both sides provides a deeper, richer context from which to help future practitioners prepare for their futures. I'm confident effective practice cant be learned only from a book!

Possibly. I definitely think it has to do with the fact that there is no one clear explanation of what it is, the role it plays in other disciplines [like marketing] and the value it delivers to an organization

It's interesting that the narrative around education often focuses on what we need for our career. For me, it was about my personal growth rather than a rung on a ladder

The public response to Dali's "bather" paintings in 1928 was violent, and the series was an embarrassment and outrage to his distraught, conservative father. He had hoped his son would produce more pleasant work.
