Me: Hey Apple, three movies I bought disappeared from my iTunes library. Apple: Oh yes, those are not available anymore. Thank you for buying them. Here are two movie rentals on us! Me: Wait... WHAT?? @tim_cook when did this become acceptable?pic.twitter.com/dHJ0wMSQH9

Part 2: Me: I am not really interested in the rentals. I want my movies back or my money back. Apple: I totally get how you feel... Me: Condescending, but go one... Apple: You see, we are just a store front. Me: Store front? 1/7pic.twitter.com/U1D3Wj0zmZ

Apple: Yeah, we take your money, but we are not responsible for what is sold. And, we certainly do NOT guarantee you get to keep anything you buy in our store front. We only guarantee that we get to keep your money. 2/7

Me: I see... So, that "Buy" button is meaningless? It should maybe be called: "Feelin Lucky?" Apple: I see you are unhappy. Have two more rentals on us. 3/7

This reminds me of a story I used to hear growing up in Brazil. A person goes to a store, sees a stereo they really like. They buy it. They get a box that looks like there is a stereo inside. 4/7

They get home only to find the box only contains a few stones. The modern twist is that, here, the person goes back to the store to ask for the stereo they bought. The store manager says sorry, can't help you. 5/7

We are just a front. So they cannot be held responsible for what the manufacturer puts in the box. I see you are unhappy. I'll do you a sweet deal. Rent the stereo from us free of charge. 6/7

You can keep it for 30 days. But, once you plug it in, you have to return it in 48 hours. Time to dust off the old DVD player, I guess. For all their faults, at least DVDs stuck around. Thank you to everyone that has retweeted. 7/7

Never buy anything via digital purchase that you really want to keep. It's just a rental priced like a purchase.

Heh. I was just thinking that when it comes to movies, I'm all about that. And yet when it comes to games, I use Steam all the time. 😅 Though the game is installed locally, if Steam ever went under, I could never reinstall these games somewhere else.

Yeah, this is why I don't buy movies or music from Apple. You never actually own it, it's just long term rental. Google I believe has the same policy for movies and tv, but at least for music you can download the original files to your computer and back them up forever

It's a common misconception that you can buy movies or music like that. You're buying temporary access to them that can be revoked at any time. This is why we need to fight for proper selling, so that people can also sell what they bought on secondary markets. Just like a DVD.

one of the reasons I always sideload my books via usb to my kindle - once I have them on there, they can't be remotely deleted. Downside? if I ever buy a second kindle, I will need to re-download them all because the downloads are locked to the encryption key of that one kindle
