When throwing shade is a good thing… The Webb telescope and science instruments are ready to enter the shade, never again to see direct sunlight. See what’s next as we : Follow deployments:

Find it hard to get out from under the covers in the morning? Imagine doing it in space! Our sunshield covers protected the sunshield while it was folded for launch. Today those covers were removed to prep for unfolding the sunshield!

We just successfully deployed our aft (back) momentum flap, which helps balance pressure from solar radiation on Webb's sunshield, much like a trim tab helps stabilize a boat or plane! ⛵ ✈️ Sail on, Webb!

Love, ❤️, love that release movie, but especially the final part when the solar panels shine brightly back into the camera. I remember lots of scientists & engineers breaking into tears of joy seeing that - what a Christmas present.

Why can you see the Moon during the day? Easy, because it’s there! It may seem odd to look up at the daytime sky and see the Moon but it’s perfectly natural. Sarah Noble breaks it down so you know when to look up. Follow more moon science:

Incredible news! Congratulations to the team! The extra propellant is largely due to the precision of the Ariane 5 launch, which exceeded the requirements needed to put on the right path, as well as the precision of the first mid-course correction maneuver.

The shiny silver material of the five-layer sunshield is a complex & innovative feat of material science & engineering. Each layer is made from a unique composite material, each has a specific thickness & size, and they must be precisely separated in space

Thanks for the smooth and accurate ride, . 🚀 Although we can only quantify the exact impact at completion of full deployment and all burns, we know that this higher accuracy helped us save fuel. This creates a longer mission life for .

Funny how easy it is to distinguish “before launch” pics from “after launch” pics based on the presence/absence of tension in people’s faces. Obviously, this is from after 🚀… ⁦⁩ ⁦
