My excellent PhD student had the last paper of his PhD published today: - work with and Thomas Parr... He devised a cool model of selective attention within a Bayesian framework (active inference) 1/

Holy moly... "the CO2 emissions from a single 60-minute fMRI scan at 3 Tesla may be as much as half a tonne". OPMs really are the future.

Even for science and medical applications, I am becoming weary of fine statistical modeling efforts, and believe that we should standardize on a handful of powerful and robust methods. An opinionated thread to give context for 1/8

This is MASSIVELY under-appreciated, especially gene-enviroment correlation. I worry about it a lot wrt psychiatric GWAS - these risk genes with tiny effects could easily be predisposing to risky environments, certainly not necessarily mediated through direct biochemical pathways

The hippocampus “holds in mind” future possibilities on alternating cycles of the theta rhythm— a potential mechanism of deliberation. Honored to have been a small part of this work, and stoked for the world to see Kenny’s elegant findings!

Some interesting papers around at the moment suggesting that classic perception and cognition biases/effects are attributable to noisy inference. This one tackles prospect theory!

More very nice work linking schizophrenia risk to unstable cortical attractor states. It will be v interesting to see if these findings in sensory cortex generalise to association cortex too...
