My article on Arthur Conan Doyle's "The Lost World" is now available in "English Literature in Transition, 1880–1920", vol. 63.2. Among other things, it discusses illustrator Pat Forbes, E. Ray Lankester, and Conan Doyle's ichthyosaur/plesiosaur sighting:

I notice that Michael Crichton's "Jurassic Park" in 1990 correctly states that Richard Owen coined dinosaur in 1842 (not 1841), even though his book was published 2 years before Hugh Torrens's article revealing this. Unless of course my copy of JP (c. 1995) is a corrected edition

Susan Fenimore Cooper was one of the 1st American environmentalists and one of the 1st American women to write essays on nature. Her most famous work, "Rural Hours" (1850), is a seasonal journal chronicling the biodiversity around Otsego County, New York.

Word is coming out that Canadian dinosaur paleontologist Dale Russell passed away on Dec. 21. Obituary is still forthcoming. He was a great scientist and a good friend. Here are three of the dinosaurs he described: Daspletosaurus, Sinornithoides, Alxasaurus
