What they want, as Douthat seems almost to get, is the status and validation that they understand to accompany sexual success, and the kind of sexual ownership of women embedded in the pre-revolution conception of marriage.
-
And they reason they aren't getting laid is that it turns out to be hard to hit on someone effectively if you don't conceive of them as a person with their own motives and desires.
-
The whole premise that this is even about the social distribution of sex and sexual desirability is granting too much to the enemy.
-
We can & should talk about the politics of desirability, of sexual technologies, & of sex work, but that really doesn't have much to do with this frustrated entitled straight boy phenomenon, which is what all these authors using the latter as a hook for the former seem to think.
