2014 Science and Nature papers from Akey and Reich groups suggested only 20% of Neanderthal ancestral genome(s) exist somewhere in human genomes. What’s your source for 40%?
I have an idea for a dating app. Non-Africans carry 1-2% Neanderthal DNA, but collectively they carry 40% of the Neanderthal genome. The app matches people with non-overlapping Neanderthal DNA. If this gets popular enough, we could recreate 40% Neanderthal - 60% human persons!

Based on a quick look, only ref 18 gives an explicit estimate of 20%. Maybe the Current Bio paper did something clever based on data in refs 17 and 19 to get to their 40% figure, but since they don’t describe that, I’m guessing they misread.

Anyway, have fun with your master plan... I’m in the 95%ile for Neanderthal content so yours may be the only dating app where I would be popular. :)

20% found in initial studies, yes. The higher estimate came from collaborators in Paabo's group in Leipzig, coauthors of our CB paper. I assume it's total % of Neandertal genome draft that may be recovered across all different extant populations based on latest worldwide data.

Yeah there is a slight disclaimer that comes with the app, there may be some residual anger left from their ancestors towards us in their epigenome

There may not be enough people with aurochs ancestry to justify a dating app. I'm less than 1% aurochs myself. Though I have a cousin who is disturbingly hairy

I can tell you from time spent on the 23&me forum. You'll get called racist and eventually the play store will shut your app down. It doesn't matter what color Neanderthals actually are either. They just imagine its a proxy for white supremacy or something.
