@vivek_murthy More people need to wake up to the loneliness epidemic in offices across the world.
No matter the role, people increasingly feel like commodities.
I'm so glad you're bringing this up. A few of the most salient points I found in the previews from your book...

1. "The most common condition I saw as a doctor was not diabetes or heart disease; it was loneliness." Yes! In the workplace, the most common condition that leaders see their employee in is not apathetic or disengaged, but disconnectedness. What could be the reason for this?

2. "There was a hunger for companionship that was evident in many of the men and women I cared for over the years." Bingo! In transactional relationships at work, it is hard to feel a sense of companionship. Workplace friendships can be empty and only last from 9-5 pm.

3. The fact is this: Your employees are not lazy, apathetic, etc. They are feeling a distinct lack of connection. The purely "win at all costs" office cultures are especially toxic in not allowing real and genuine connection to form. What's at the root of this?

4. I believe the shareholder-first model of running companies puts an overemphasis on the very things that don't lead to long term growth, long term retention, and genuine connections to form. We need more

5. "At work, loneliness is associated with reduced engagement and productivity. In our schools, loneliness affects our children’s self-esteem and their development." Similarly, greater connection leads to greater productivity, greater happiness and satisfaction at work.

6. In the modern knowledge economy, managers & leaders need to be genuinely engaged and interested in employees. They must stop with the superficial check-ins on "how's about that weather." Unfortunately, managers aren't always picked for their ability to connect...

7. Want greater psychological safety at work? This comes from feeling a sense of genuine safety. This can't be faked. It starts with a sense of connection. This is #1 factor in having teams perform well as per Google's Project Aristotle is just that--psychological safety.

8. Thanks again @vivek_murthy for bringing this conversation to the forefront on @mariashriver's site.
We need to bring this idea into offices across America and empower leaders to connect genuinely.
