I think there's a really interesting discussion to be had about the role of nomenclature and how it affects how we study things (maybe a @TMRO topic?) but it gets buried under tribalistic preferences of "pro-" and "anti-" and such.

How, and more importantly, why, would classification of an object change how we study it?

I disagree 100%. This is science and it's important to know what objects formed with our solar system and which did not.

Oh - that’s a fine discussion to have. What formed here - what didn’t. That’s a crucial thing to understand. But that’s a TOTALLY different thing to the childish ‘what’s a planet’ argument that’s been going on for 10+ years.

I totally agree with you, Doug. It's true that classification is important, but having these heated, public debates--with celebrity popularizers like Neil deGrasse Tyson stepping in--just distracts the public from the real science that's taking place.

I don't care what's a planet as long as it's well defined... and "has cleared the neighbourhood around its orbit" is nott well defined. There are massive differences in the amount of objects in Plutos and the planets orbits, that's true, but it should be defined somehow

1. There are two types of science: physics and stamp collecting. This is entirely stamp collecting. 2. If you're going to say something is "not a planet", come up with a name that does not contain the word "planet".

Think .
@FringeDoctor’s talk at the North East Astronomy Forum put the IAU decision in proper perspective with humor too. ( it’s on YouTube BTW) Regardless, Pluto is a place that is crying for more attention & deserving of future exploration. Let’s go explore.Danke! IMHO (I don't believe in planetary formation by core accretion), a planet is a lump of supernova shrapnel that was big enough & hot enough, or had sufficient heat from fissile material in its core to attain spherical shape under self-gravity before its crust solidified. Period.

You just proved my point.
