Today is the anniversary of the testimony I and other members of the l0pht gave to the US Senate in 1998. It was the first time the US Govt. publicly referenced “hackers” in a positive context. The coverage was national and even international. Come behind the scenes. /Thread

The Open Source Intelligence (OSINT) Community is impressive. Work on tracking countries contributing to the aggressor’s war chest - coal - AIS/Satellite - sanctioned people’s planes - ADSB - oil and gas - AIS/Satellite Others?

We've had an uptick in usage in Eastern Europe & rumors are circulating that Signal is hacked & compromised. This is false. Signal is not hacked. We believe these rumors are part of a coordinated misinformation campaign meant to encourage people to use less secure alternatives.

This is a killer piece by on Zero Trust and how the term has been co-opted by industry and is aspirational or (charitably) misunderstood. Strong recommend.

Regarding BGP attacks you can watch teams (governments) botch it, sometimes with notable collateral effect. They usually get it right from that point on…

We used to publicly break things for fun and shared benefit as a community; these days, attackers & security vendors may equally profit from defenders’ ignorance. Perverse incentives abound in security, per :

I loved these packages. Gray and gold with window (hooray/look out for UV erasers). Two questions: 1) what types of left over things are we using that still have these inside? 2) are there any interesting stories or books about this particular package (point me please)?

Through me other L0pht people ended up working for Alan. Our playground was full of Unix systems, VMS, oddball others (TOPS, RSTS, MPE/XL, MSFT Windows), and lots of networks (ATM/Sonet, x25, crazy satellite links, tcp/ip, …). We were authorized to compromise all of it…

Alan looked at me and smiled again. He said, nonplussed, “think I should call him back again?” My jaw was in my lap. Alan was on a different level. Alan had true calm and a sense of dry humor in situations where everyone else would loose their cool.

Ultimately the guy was *yelling* at Alan, and then hung up on him. Alan looked at me, smiling, picked up the phone and called the person back. Alan said, in the most mild manner, “I think we got disconnected.” The person paused, screamed, then hung up again.

There was a time where someone was yelling at Alan (speaker phone). Alan just remained unphased and super relaxed. The person on the other end could tell he was not making Alan upset and the person lost their cool more and more the more they could not rile Alan. It was amazing.

He had a picture of a dog on his desk. I remember asking him when I could meet his dog. That was Buddy. Buddy dog was a great dog, he said. Turned out Buddy had died a few years back. Alan just loved still seeing Buddy-dog everyday at work on his desk. Good dog. Good man.

On the personal side I think I only ever knew his wife Linda as “the lovely Linda. That’s how he always referred to her, in any context. He truly meant it and you could hear it in his voice.
