Is it possible on imac 24 or 24 cinema display?
It is! You just need to have a Kepler or newer nVidia card, or Intel HD Graphics 4000 or newer.

Google says that it can be switched on via terminal command. So its a software feature?

Yep! Although you'll need to use SwitchResX to create some custom resolutions.
