The Mid-2010 MacBook (Pro) has an APFS-compatible BootROM (when updated with High Sierra). You can use an APFS volume just fine as long as it has the latest BootROM flashed. And, while it can't run Mojave natively, you can do so using my patch: http://dosdude1.com/mojave

i was thinking about it for a sec, but then i saw that there might be issues when updating. Since that's my mom's MBP i didn't want it to break in case she decides to install some update.
