"And what strikes me, more than anything during the walk, is the apparent mercy of the place." Experience the first walk across and through Winter Hill with Emily Oldfield and Neil Winward. Oldfield's series traversing the land starts here.

  2. Whitebeam (on the left) rescued from thorny clutches at Holmead Field today, but the trunk has been bent out of shape by the weight of bramble. What should we do next - leave it so the story continues, coppice or pollard..?

Nature-writing often places the focus on the individual. But the aim of the network is to explore how women's experiences of the outdoors are shaped by structural factors: such as relative lack of leisure time, & fear of violence.

Pole position. Holly gains extra height by growing from the top of an old telegraph pole reused as a fence post at Winterbourne Came, Dorset. Leads me to ask what role might Holly have in assisting natural regeneration on the urban fringes of Dorchester..?

Best explanation of how the meadows worked that I have found is in PDNHAS v.89, Management and Land Use of Water Meadows in the Frome Valley, Dorset, B. Jane Whitehead, 257-281. Tithe maps shows how sections were owned by multiple parishes - numbered areas are Fordington

It's World Wetlands Day, celebrating the vital roles of fens, marshes, bogs, swamps, deltas, mangroves, as water-keepers, carbon-storers, flood-slowers, life-makers... Tell me the best writing you know about these overlooked & threatened places. 📷Engel9

West Ward Common just to the west of Dorchester shows the characteristic topography of the old water meadows during wet winters. The view of the Common from the Iron Age fort at Poundbury Camp is spectacular - well worth a visit on .

Old water control structures can still be seen amongst the old water meadows near Dorchester. Being fed by chalk springs at a constant 12*C, the River Frome helped to bring early growth of grass which meant the water meadows were very valuable in years gone by.

And just downstream of Ten Hatches you can find one of the old bathing places where people would swim in the summer - when the flow in the Frome was a bit slower.

There are many wonderful wetlands in Dorchester to celebrate on . We have the River Frome with it's tributaries, millstreams and meanders. It powered the Town's mills & enabled the engineering of the fine water meadows. This is Ten Hatches, known to Thomas Hardy.
