I think it's really interesting that every time people have asked me this (and these are both medievalists and non-medievalists) they are expecting another answer. The answer I give also makes certain people who expect the affective, I was a Tolkien fan answer, relax&reassess.

The experimental aspect of medieval literature is one of the things I love most about it too--and it falls in line with my own fannish engagement, such as it is. I've always sat firmly between creative and critical engagement with everything I read or view. I can't switch it off.
