I'm still processing your brilliance, David. But let me make two points, for what they're worth. If memory serves, Goel got IRB permission-- at least for the 1st iteration of his class & then probably a waiver for future classes. This, of course, is a legalistic way of viewing

considering that FB/Cambridge Analytica debacle researcher got an IRB, isn't it pretty clear that IRB is just laughable at this point as any kind of indicator of ethics.

The PSU Education Department also got IRB, but this didn't do a thing for their havey-cavey ethics and the fact that violated FERPA and asked grad. students to harvest data w/out any consent.
