I usually try my best to ignore this, the absolute worst part about my job. I'm lucky to hear from a lot of wonderful people about my work. I also get a lot of trolls and general weirdness; to some degree I expect this, as an Asian and a woman and a writer. Haters gonna hate!

But there's a small but vocal group that comes after me every time I publish anything: an interview. An essay about my dad's death. It doesn't matter what it is, they're there. I am sad to say they're mostly Asian men, and it's often the same people, even though it's been YEARS.

like here is a typical example. I removed the name/handle. But it's not an egg, not someone with 13 followers.pic.twitter.com/6NJBgxQS1l

this is really hard to write about, because I would like it to not happen, I'm sure my saying this won't change their behavior, and I already feel very unsafe

but it's really disturbing to me how often they will specifically mention my marriage/my CHILDREN. I've had obscene cartoons sent to me. I've heard about videos.

As an adoptee, it also just knocks the wind out of me to read that I hate myself or other Asians; that I'm not proud of who I am. Growing up surrounded by white family in a white community, it took me YEARS to learn to be proud of who I am. BUT I AM. I have been for a long time.

I'm not perfect. I'm learning all the time; I'm sure I fuck up a LOT. but I'm trying. I want to lift up others in my community & other communities. I want to do good work and support/boost/publish others doing good work. I don't hate anyone.

"I'm sure that'll go just swell for you" sure doesn't sound threatening at ALLpic.twitter.com/HHUu2WxSlR

My mentions are...well. But I've also gotten a ton of replies and DMs from Asian women who've faced the same. Who've been targeted, who've been threatened, who've been scared. This problem is common as dirt. It's not going away. Our community has to deal with it.
