A Republican candidate in Maine says he’s sorry for calling a Parkland student a "skinhead lesbian"http://nym.ag/2GqqNQZ

Grrr. He absolutely should apologise, but it pisses me off this is framed as apologising for calling her a skinhead lesbian. Neither of those are bad things to be! She rocks.

Though she identifies as bisexual. And skinhead is complicated at least in the US definition since the second definition basically means white supremacist. Though hard to tell what this Republican NRA lobbyist politician's WTF insult was about...

Have not heard that definition before. Skinhead subculture originated in Britain in the 1960s as a celebration of working class culture. They actually adopted a lot of black music/fashion because of the influence of Jamaican populations in their local communities.

yes, but in the 80s and early 90s, a big part of that aesthetic was adopted by neonazis

There was a stark political split that happened in the 80s. Worth reading Osbergy. Again, collapsing or oversimplifying working class subcultures is just as harmful as doing the same to minority ethnic & religious groups, lgbt people, and others who face structural discrimination

um not sure if I need to read up on something I was part of (on the anti-racist side) :-)

but you're absolutely right – oversimplifications unhelpful, but in NL, the racist skins quickly so dominated the picture, that in the general perception, skinhead became synonymous with neonazi. not sure if that is so in the US?

It’s the second definition in the US dictionary entry after having a shaved head. The politician is from the US, the connotation is generally referring to neonazis.

interesting! I'll have to take a look and see what quotations they use. I am willing to wager that the secondary definition was a late 80s development.

In Germany, „skinhead“ totally refers to the violent neo-nazis of (mostly) the 90s. The English subculture might be known to older/more culturally aware ppl and via one or two movies, but it‘s not what is generally associated with the term.
