been thinking more about this. I think it's super good & moves discussion in a productive direction. I've never advocated throwing out all scholarship on Crusades (despite accusations to the contrary). We should be aware of its sometimes colonial subtext though. #medievaltwitterhttps://twitter.com/homophonous/status/946763848522043394 …

If we threw out everything written by a sexist we would have practically no editions, pre-70’s scholarship etc. (and of course few medieval sources) So yeah, use it, but be aware of the gendered assumptions.

Shall I discuss certain recent examples in our recent scholarly areas where one can look back at decades of scholarship now that someone has come forward as an MRA white supremacist and show all the ways those ideologies have folded and been cited in the scholarship?

I was thinking about that instance too. I don't think anyone here is saying scholarship is neutral or separable from the person who produced it. The question is, knowing its situatedness, can we find any usefulness in it?

It will depend on the situatedness. As for that particular example, nope. The scholarship of 20ish years pretty much shows ideology as analysis and thus most of it is not useful. Geary never said in class we should not use the MGH, we should know the situation and be aware.
