Know the colleagues who are problematic and, if they're pre/early modern, be honest with prospective BIPOC students. They truly don't deserve the peak racism that will come their way, especially at the dissertation stage.

What I witnessed the past six months, even the past two years, was not only problematic but painful to me as an OG

To BIPOC PCRS students: Accomplices "ride and die"; allies will "shop" you in a hot minute (if I may borrow a word my cockney ex often used). How can you tell: look at their publications, esp the "old guard" who market themselves as race studies folk but

fail to be "critical." Check the number of BIPOC students admitted to a program (area doesn't matter) and were retained and graduated with their academic interest intact. Reach out to these folk about their experiences, especially if they're PCRS.

Check the institution's most recent hirings. Would I rec UC Santa Cruz for PCRS or ShakeRace? No, even with its CRES program (some amazing faculty by the way). PCRS and ShakeRace are disciplinary specific, not every pre/early modern or Shakespearean

is interested in premodern critical race studies. The end result of my six months: there is a new BIPOC PhD working in PCRS yet the struggle to get there should not have been riddled with obstacles and what I can only call "Karenish" forms of racism.

With the academy, and the humanities in particular, as it is, pursuit of a PhD (never easy) with a focus on critical race studies can be filled with white supremacist landmines. No BIPOC should be subjected to or encouraged to believe the fault is theirs.

In the end, I'm proud of the BIPOC additions to
#PCRS#ShakeRace communities. We need to work to make the path a little less tortuous, less filled with pettiness, micro-aggressive hostility. White sensibilities work hard to inflict harm. Very hard.1 reply 4 retweets 19 likesShow this thread -
BIPOC and PCRS accomplices, we need to protect our own. In this particular case, I stepped in when asked. Can't do it every time. Problematic people are known to us, let's stop pretending they're allies and do no harm. I can testify to the harm. Enough.

To
#ShakeRace and#PCRS ECRs who are BIPOC and need a safe space, a voice (not always listened to), and support, my DMs are open. To the pre/early modern academic community, you need to do better. Fini1 reply 3 retweets 26 likesShow this thread
Yes. All this. Also inviting PCRS scholars to give talks will not do anything for your BIPOC grad students wanting to do PCRS. Band-Aid diversity BS.

Also it is so shitty when the grads have to do this do they can get some discussion and the dept. is not doing anything even to do this.
