but have different experiences, partly bc he's a wyte dude but we usually try &laugh away the violence enacted on us. How messed up are we as a society & as part of academia that this is "normal"? Racial violence is so embedded &engrained that BIPOC have to learn ways to 3/

survive/cope & this is compounded w/ those of us involved in activism. This isn't about shutting ourselves away & selfcare, this is about how we are supposed to react when confronted w/ regular & amplified racial violence we have never asked for & is out of our control. 4/

We cannot hide. Like when someone tells you they want to dig your grave bc they are so angry that you have said you want your wyte peers to acknowledge you belong in your field. Or that you "need bullets" bc you have spoken abt holding on to terms that are not just racially 5/

loaded but are inaccurate & outdated. How do we respond to those things? And the response is violent wytelash. Our boundaries are disrespected all the time. From touching our hair, making comments abt our skin, features, bodies, intellect, we are always on "display." 6/pic.twitter.com/HFOxG5XQLH

So anyway, like usual, I don't have the answers, but I don't know how to *not* normalize the racial abuse and violence thrown at me or others like me. How is this sustainable? Do you think it is? 7/

The person in the meeting had to explicitly tell me this wasn't normal bc I have become so numb to violence against me. She asked what institutions, what senior scholars & what orgs are doing. We know the answer, by and large, is nothing. 8/

I guess we have to ask ourselves & each other what we are doing to protect each other, as communities. This is obv more than just a top down problem. This is an across the board problem. Do we actually care abt each other as humans? 9/

And another thing is that unless we are constantly reminding wyte ppl that we are going through this, you all forget. See here: https://twitter.com/ISASaxonists/status/1344778267681644550?s=20 … 10/

🧵Thanks to those who stuck it out & stayed with me for this 366-day thread. My hope is it will be a reminder of what racism is like every day for BIPOC. There's always something big or small that takes a little piece of us every day. You’ll notice if you scroll through that 1/10 https://twitter.com/ISASaxonists/status/1212459439887986688 …

Part of #antiracism is staying engaged. It requires you to work on short-term memory loss. The racism against BIPOC doesn't go away just bc you can't see it or no one tells you. Your support is vital. 11/
