Is there a reason why we are using diaspora considering this is an empire? Do ppl not understand what diaspora means?https://twitter.com/boydellbrewer/status/1352558633377271808 …

Featured Paperback: Heirs of the Vikings: History and Identity in Normandy and England, c.950-c.1015, by Katherine Cross, brings the Norman experience into dialogue with a wider literature on the #viking diaspora: a new facet of the English experience. https://boybrew.co/3o4OKBr  pic.twitter.com/ewEkjfIFfj

      I don’t use diaspora - I think I challenge that framing.

This is exactly a question I thought of today!! What is the difference between diaspora and empire (as analysed within Viking studies)?

Is there a reason boydell has decided to use the term in its promotion literature?

Yes - because my book engages a little with that literature and I think challenges it (though not much had been published using that term when I wrote it - it was finished four years ago).

I am not a Viking researcher but interested in the debate for comparative purposes (medieval north Japan). Any references here gratefully received!
