I've been thinking a lot about the arguments put forward by Biddick and Utz that the medieval academy in Germany and the UK deliberately depoliticized in the 19th century following moments of political overexposure.https://twitter.com/WulfgarTheBard/status/1352933551554105344 …

      Dr. Penitenziagite added,

#Archaeology31 #Identity "Identity", "culture", "indigenous"... terms that put archaeology at the forefront of current political debate. Have we been careless in our use of such terms? Do we continue to believe our work exists in isolation to the wider word? How will we respond? pic.twitter.com/23r48LXu0H

That is, in both cases, academics were subject to political blowback and their immediate response was to retreat back into their manuscripts and hide.

Mmm, Utz specifically points at the failed German unification of 1848; Biddick has something about a professor at Oxford whose predecessor resigned in disgrace, although I fail to recall the exact details.

The fact that Biddick's "The Shock of Medievalism" isn't on every grad student's quals list continues to befuddle me. Even if it was only for the chapter "Bede's Blush" (a humanities dean, an Old English professor, and Chicana theorist walk into a room...)

Well it’s fascinating now that Utz goes for both sides things when he is thinking about the medieval politics now. He may be gone discussing the medieval’s politicization of the past but sure wants to do the “anti racists are the same as the racists” now.
