White West Coast Cali is very different from BIPOC west coast Cali.

Yes. I definitely thought about the way race matters in this discourse...

Also I wonder if it about regional norms. PNW apparently feels like Scandinavian Midwest. They do not talk to you & invite you over until they know you really well. SoCAL expects ppl to chat and relate in grocery lines etc. But ppl know there is no expectation of closer connexn.

So it is definitely a regional set of expectations about local interactions. Ppl also forget that all the Dust bowl white folks moved to Cali in the 30s. Stares at Bakersfield and other white conservative bastions.

Also within region. Bay Area gnashes about LA and shouts about SoCAL taking its water. LA does not gnash about any other city in the region. It also does not care about NYC. It mostly is just like, oh another city. Though it does laugh about NYC saying it has good tacos.

I have only been to LA twice. Both times were great but I... definitely experienced some specific antiblackness coming in and out of LAX. Could have just been my luck. I will say two of my closest friends in academia are Angelenos. And the whole world is antiblack in its own way.

I have also heard for a couple of decades about it being super duper hard for Black women to date in West Coast cities. But again, could just be rumor. I do think that BIPOC experiences out West likely differ, it’s a big region, and I’d love to read more.

LAX is like the LAPD. Which means all of us know they are white supremacist terrible. I could totally see how terrible the dating would be in some parts of the West coast. PNW and parts of the Bay Area (stares at SF and Silicon Valley). San Diego hmmm.
