Historic day.
Been talking about the #BlackMidwest since I got on this app.
I'll always be a Rust Belt Midwesterner, but the (bloody) way our counterparts obtained those lands still haunts the region.
(Be sure to watch the #LovecraftCountryHBO premiere. Essential viewing.)

Also, the way the Midwest works, the best experts on the recent situation (which I am not naming - tired of Black hypervisibility and the voyeurism of others) are Black folks in Wisconsin. Each state, region, and metro has specific histories & contemporary contexts.

I was not here (intentionally) during the killing of Mr. Floyd, but folks not from the Twin Cities did the same thing they did to folks from Flint during the water crisis. If you're not from there, you're only seeing the tip of the iceberg of that *specific* horror.

I am from the state next door, have been to WI a half dozen times, and yet I will be RTing and centering perspectives from Black Wisconsin, and other folk they vouch for... because they know their state's racial history. (I don't. And I know more than some of those talking.)

I'll never forget what happened to Ferguson & STL in the aftermath of those long, hot days 6 years ago this month. There needs to be more respect for what's local, and (frankly) more humility. General recognition of a situation =/= domination of the narrative for other purposes.

This is wisdom some of us learned from our elders: no matter where you are in this country, or in many places around the world, *talk to the Black folks who live there.* (Lots of talk about the Green Book - "we need a new one!" - without understanding the Green Book's purpose.)

Anyway. I have been remembering Wisconsin, Kenosha, and Milwaukee in my prayers, sending 'em practical help, and shouting them out when and as I can... ...because I was raised in an amazing culture that "taught me how to do."
