My students crushed their take-home exams! They were basically shorter, informal essays and bibliography building along them to roughly do the outlining work I would do to frame a thematic lecture. I figured if they could do that, they got the gist of the class at a method level.

Or... just hear me out.. No exams. They never did much as a measure of understanding to begin with. Multi-week projects are much better at continually assessing students' understanding and allow them to absorb material in a more natural, meaningful way.
